Don Walker Awards Announced

The HIC'08 Gala Dinner was the venue for the announcement of this years Don Walker awards. Presented for exceptional contribution to improving health outcomes through innovation in health informatics the awards had many outstanding applicants.

These awards are presented in the three areas of Efficiency, Effectiveness and Access and this years winners are:

Efficiency:

HIREU University of Sydney, Sydney South West Area Health Service, NSW Health and Cerner Pty Ltd for the project titled "Improving Healthcare Delivery Using an Evidence based Approach to the Implementation of Electronic Ordering Systems"

Effectiveness:

David Dinh, Michael Dinh and Mathew Chu for the project titled "ACAFE- Emergency Hospital Decision Support"

Access:

Ping Yu and Esther Munyisia for the project titled "Change in documentation time associated with the introduction of Electronic Documentation"

HealthBeyond represented the first time that the consumer e-health community came together in Australia. We are looking to continue the positive engagement generated on that day through establishing a dedicated Health Beyond, consumer e-health group on the Health Hub social networking site.

At the centre of this activity is the Health Beyond Blog. Click on one of the entries to see what is happening. You could also join the Health Hub site yourself and contribute to the discussions around consumer e-health in Australia.

HIC09 delivered an exceptional program of workshops, lectures and practical industry presentations from world leaders in Health IT. HIC09 briought together a diverse collective of healthcare professionals and information specialists. The fusion of thought is what made the event so special.

Recent Event - hpf '08

The successful completion of the inaugural Health Privacy Futures conference - HPF'08, brought together healthcare providers, consumers and Australia's leading privacy experts, to help bring clarity and definition to this critical issue. Through HPF ’08 innovative workshops, outstanding presentations and engaging speakers, HPF ‘08 has succeeded in offering better understanding of the national perspective and making a significant contribution to setting the national regulatory framework for the future of health privacy. In addition, our sponsors’ company display stands provided another interactive networking opportunity for the delegates.

CeH Website

The Coalition for eHealth (CeH) now has its own website at http://www.ceh.net.au/. Visit the website the see an overview of the CeH, the consensus statement and the expanding CeH membership list. In the future this site will be used to communicate the key activities of the Coalition.

eJHI

Special Issue on Smart Healthcare Systems: Call for Papers. Issue will be guest-edited by Anthony Maeder and Carsten Röcker. Deadline for submissions: 16th May 2010.

The Electronic Journal of Health Informatics (eJHI) is now an established online journal with considerable support from both readers and contributors. The journal is an initiative that HISA has been closely associated with from its inception. Evelyn Hovenga, the journals chief editor has just submitted the annual report for the journal. Position Paper

HISA has worked with the Australian Healthcare and Hospital Association (AHHA) to develop a position paper on short to medium term projects in Health Information Management following a request from the Australian Minister's Office.

Michael Legg (HISA President) led the roundtable of over 20 industry and academic experts in eHealth. Michael Legg, David More and Richard Dixon-Hughes used the roundtable contributions to develop the position statement that was delivered by Michael and the team to the Minister's Office and senior Government officers in an AHHA briefing session on Monday 21st April 2008.

The International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), plays a major global role in the application of information science and technology in the fields of healthcare and research in medical, health and bio informatics.

IMIA represents the informatics organisations in over 53 countries. IMIA promotes research and international cooperation, dissemination of knowledge, the practical application of informatics and represents health informatics within international health organisations.

HISA is the Australian affiliate of IMIA.
