Mission & Purpose

Mission

The mission of the Allied Health Informatics Special Interest Group is to act as a bridge between the worlds of health informatics / e-health and allied health.  We wish to engage allied health professionals and the health informatics community globally; to work together on ideas, initiatives and projects that contribute to improving the quality, safety, efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery and the health status of individuals, communities and populations.

Purpose

Our aims are:

  • To promote issues of import to allied health within health informatics.
  • To promote and increase the understanding of e-health and health informatics issues as they apply to the allied health professions, within all areas of clinical practice, education, and the provision of healthcare generally.
  • To support and provide a network for allied health professionals who are working in, or who have an interest in e-health/health informatics issues.
  • To promote the work of allied health professionals in the e-health arena.
  • To develop and support global initiatives designed to enhance the use and successful implementation of information and communication technologies (ICT) within allied health and healthcare generally.
  • To develop and support global e-health initiatives designed to empower health consumers and improve health status.
  • To foster collaboration among allied health professionals, industry, academia and others who have an interest in health informatics.
  • To liaise and foster collaborative relationships with other national and international groups.

As global interest in allied health informatics grows, we will work to establish allied health informatics working groups through the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA).  We also anticipate the eventual formation of sub-groups representing specific areas (eg primary care, palliative care, aged care etc) and perhaps sub-groups representing specific allied health professions.
